Saturn has
introduced a hybrid version of the VUE.

It uses
GM's Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) hybrid system coupled to a CVT
(continuously variable transmission). This is similar to the system used in
hybrid GM trucks, but a little more sophisticated. The
electric motor provides some acceleration on the VUE, not just to quickly
restart the engine when the vehicle is stopped.

of the VUE hybrid may qualify for a $650 federal tax credit. Click

An interesting
aspect to this design is that most of the hybrid system is manufactured as a
complete "plug and play" system, called NiMHax(R) Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH),
from Cobasys. It includes
the Ni-MH batteries and controller electronics. This suggests that this system
might be relatively easy for GM to incorporate into other models if the VUE
does well. This system is reported to pay for itself much faster than current
full hybrids, due to reduced fuel costs. A design like this would seem like it
would make sense for fleets that put on a lot of miles, particularly in
start/stop delivery applications (like mail delivery trucks).
The system is
based on a 36 volt electrical system, compared to the 330-500 volt range used
in many hybrids. This is a more economical approach. The base price of
the VUE Hybrid
is $22,995.
The
configuration is based on GM's 2.4 liter four cylinder engine, with a rating
of 170 HP. The hybrid version of the VUE will be available with front wheel drive
only, not all wheel drive.
EPA ratings
are 27 city / 32 highway with automatic transmission.
The VUE has
done well in the government's crash tests, with a five star rating on both
front and side impacts. Safety options to think about are anti-lock brakes
with traction control, and head curtain side air bags.
The vehicle
is made at GM's plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
