So you're
interested in a deluxe solar package. There are many
variations on what your could have installed. A good solar
contractor will can show your your options and make sure that
your system can be upgraded without difficulty if you think
you may want to do that. But here's a very rough idea what a
typical deluxe system might look like:
for electricity:
solar photovoltaic (PV) panels rated at about 9,000 watts (This might be
somewhere in the vicinity of
50-60
modules, depending on the ones used.)
2 Sharp 3500
watt inverters
GridPoint Connect "smart" battery
backup system
hardware for PV system
(includes hardware to attach panels to roof, AC disconnect,
electrical wiring, etc.)
for hot water:
collectors for
heating water (typically 2 or more collectors)
water storage tank
water pump
1 or 2 Takagi tankless water heaters to augment output of
solar water collectors. These only heat water when needed, so
they are very energy efficient. This replaces the old water heater.
hardware
A system like this would meet
MOST or ALL of your energy needs. It would reduce your monthly energy
bill. It would also reduce your impact on the environment. A
system like this would have a battery backup, so
during electrical outages, you'd still have power. The
GridPoint Connect unit kicks in automatically if the power
goes out. It's self-monitoring in case it's not maintaining a
backup charge properly.
If
your state allows "net-metering", like Virginia and
Maryland, you can sell excess electricity back to the power
company. When you're not home on a sunny day, your system
could be producing electricity and providing this clean energy
to others through the electrical grid.
The tankless water kicks in
when demand for hot water exceeds the solar water system's
ability to provide it. The tankless system heats water
extremely quickly on demand. It doesn't store water like a
conventional water heater.
To learn more about your
options, you can
find a local solar contractor or
consultant.
