GM has shown a fuel cell vehicle that represents a significant step forward in
design. The big improvement is that it can travel 300 miles before needing it's
hydrogen tank refilled. Existing fuel cell vehicles need refueling between 170
and 250 miles.
It's still expensive; so fuel cells vehicles still have a way to go before
they're ready to be available for sale. And an infrastructure of refueling
stations and hydrogen production facilities aren't here yet.
But, more and more, we're seeing that the car companies really do seem to have a
commitment to developing fuel cell vehicles, and step by step, are making good
progress. GM and Hyundai are hinting at 2010 as a time frame for putting
production vehicles on sale.
Performance is good: GM says the Sequel can go from 0-60 in less than 10
seconds.
The vehicle was introduced at the North American Auto Show in Detroit in
January.
