Toyota Introduces a "Smaller Prius"... the Prius c

Resources for the Washington DC area

Toyota has brought out a new member of the Prius family: the Prius c. It is smaller and more efficient than the orginal Prius. The original Prius is still being made; the new model is an addition to the lineup.

The "c" is for city, and it is sized for convenient parking in that little space that all the big SUVs have to pass by. The mileage is rated at 53 mpg in the city, and 46 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 50 mpg. The c weighs 2,500 pounds (vs. 3,042 for the "regular" Prius).

The c uses a 1.5 liter engine (compared to a 1.8 engine in the original Prius). Total power, including the electric motor, is 99 HP for the c, vs. 134 HP for the standard Prius. This is a good arrangement for the person that mainly drives in the city. The c might seem a little noisier and less smooth than it's big sister if you plan to drive on the highway much.

If you are a techie, you moght be surprised at the gizmos available in such a modestly priced hybrid. Toyota offers an optional Entune™ system. It includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio capability, HD Radio™, and voice recognition.

The c is a substantial 19.1 inches shorter than the regular Prius. But a nicely sized hatch and fold down rear seats give good cargo carying capacity.
