One of the best investments under $20 you may ever make is a good low flow shower head. Shower heads from Niagara Conservation have consistently been highly regarded by the likes of Family Circle and Good Housekeeping. They deliver a good stream at around 1.5 gallons per minute. Older shower heads use as much as 5 GPM. The manufacturer says your savings can run around $91 each year in water and energy costs. You can also save 10's of thousands of gallons of water.

Another efficient shower head is the Waterpik Eco-Flow.

TOTO® Dual-Max™ toilets can use either 1.6 gallons per flush, or save even more water by using just .9 gpf. A switch on top of the toilet quickly selects either option.

HUVCO tubular skylight

Many people enjoy the natural sunlight from tubular skylights. Sunlight is brought into the living area through a highly reflective mirror-like pipe. This one is from HUVCO.

It's easy to get ripped off on home improvements and repairs. It's well worth subscribing to Washington Consumers Checkbook before you need to make a big expenditure. You'll get ratings of various local service businesses. This publication is worth it's cost many times over.

Before you deal with a contractor, you might want to check to see if any complaints have been filed against them. For instance, Fairfax County has a good consumer affairs division. Their complaint section lets you file a complaint or view existing ones. Many municipalities in the area have a consumer affairs division that can help you if needed.
