Sunflowers are a perfect choice for any gardener.

They're:

so cheery

easy to grow

perfect for kids or beginning gardeners

suitable for virtually any growing condition

good in containers or a garden

smart: they turn toward the sun, and even turn to await the morning sun

They like full sun and bloom best in areas with hot summers. Start the seeds outdoors after the last expected of frost. Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil. Water them well. Seeds will germinate in 5–15 days, depending on the variety. You can thin plants to 2 or 3 feet apart. Only the tallest varieties require staking. Once established, watering is less critical.

If you want to attract birds, some varieties are very good for that.
