Ford has
announced they plan to introduce an electric version of the
Focus in 2011. Compared to the Chevy Volt, which will go about
40 miles on an electric charge, then use a "range extender"
gasoline engine to go beyond that, the Focus will be pure
electric.
The story of
this vehicle has a bit of a fairy tale quality to it. A small
company named Magna took a regular Focus and modified it to
make it purely electric. This was done without Ford's
knowledge. When Magna showed it to Ford, it was so impressive,
that Ford ending up deciding to put a model like this into
production. This is a great example of who smaller companies
with good ideas can be successful, and help transform the
economy into one that's functional and sustainable.
The Focus is
scheduled to be restyled, so the final product will look
different than the car in the video.
