The Ford Escape Hybrid won the 2005 North American Truck of the Year award at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The winner is selected by 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

Ford Division President Steve Lyons said "being selected 'Truck of the Year' is a great accomplishment for the world's first full-hybrid SUV. Escape Hybrid embodies our philosophy of great products, strong business and better world -- and paves the way for the future as we expand our commitment to hybrid technology."

Factors looked at in voting by the journalists include  innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. The Escape beat out eleven other trucks to win the award.
