"Stop & Start" technology
Starting in 2004, the in France will launch its new "Stop & Start"
technology, a system which turns off the engine whenever the vehicle stops - at
a red light for example - then automatically and perceptibly switches it on
again as soon as the driver touches the vehicle controls.
This intelligent Stop & Start
system should lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 5 to 8%, depending on
the type of use. It should also help reduce urban traffic noise. It represents a
first level of hybridization, designed to address customer needs, and is readily
adaptable, thanks to its limited impact on vehicle architecture and its low
cost. The Group aims to equip 50,000 vehicles with the system by the end of
2006.
PSA Peugeot Citroën is also
working on developing electric vehicles and the infrastucture in France to make
them practical and easy to use and recharge. The Group has already sold 10,000
electric vehicles since their introduction in 1995.
As a long term strategy, the
Group is also developing fuel cell vehicles and has shown two fuel cell
prototypes.
