(Sept,
2006) Performance Bicycle has become the first U.S. sports
retailer to use renewable energy for its entire operations.
Through an agreement with Boulder, Colorado-based Renewable Choice
Energy, the company will purchase about 5.1 million kWh of renewable
energy credits annually to meet 100% of the electricity use of its
stores, corporate headquarters, distribution centers and call
center. In addition, Performance Bicycle is offering free gift cards
to customers who choose wind power for their homes.
REI has announced they will be buying 20% of their electricity
from green sources. The purchase of
wind, landfill gas and solar generated electricity will provide 100
percent of the power for 17 of REI’s 82 retail stores, and is
equivalent to the annual use of more than 1,000 average homes. REI
also has announced that it will be a founding member of the Seattle
Climate Partnership, a group of Seattle employers working together
on climate issues.
