Ford plans to make a
hybrid version of the Five Hundred. The new hybrid is expected in
the 2008-2010 timeframe.
An engine that seems
likely for this car is a new 3.5 liter V6 that Ford recently unveiled. It is an
especially flexible and clean engine. It's designed such that it can
be configured in many different ways, such as a standard gasoline
version, a hybrid version, or a supercharged version. It is also
designed to be able to be meet PZEV standards.
The existing Five
Hundred is unique in a few ways:
It is available as an
all wheel drive car, so it is an alternative to an SUV for some
people.
It's higher than many
cars, for those who like a higher vantage point. But it's not as high
as most SUVs, so it has a lower center of gravity.
It incorporates some of
the safety engineering from Volvo, which Ford now owns.
