The next generation Prius is expected around the Spring of 2009. It is
expected to unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in early
2009.
There's been a lot of rumor in the press about what it will be like.
Mileage is likely to be in the 50 mile per gallon range. But the car
is expected to have considerably more power. This should appeal to
anyone who thinks the current Prius is underpowered.
There's a lot of
conflicting information about the hybrid battery. Initially, it looked
like the new Prius would use advanced lithium based batteries,
allowing astounding gas mileage. But, it's not clear that Toyota will
be able to have a lithium based battery ready by 2009. Due to safety
concerns, Toyota appears to be taking a cautious approach, It's likely
they will continue
using nickel metal hydride batteries.
Toyota is also developing a new family size hybrid expected in about the same
time frame. Maybe this car will use a next generation battery system for the
hybrid drive.
Honda is expected to have two new hybrids around this time
frame. One will be a lower priced car than the Civic Hybrid, The other
is expected to be a sporty, small hybrid car.
Overall, very exciting developments. But you'll have to wait a little longer to get one.
